Miscellaneous Fish

These are fish that do not belong in the major categories of fish.

 Rainbowfish

Rainbowfish are great fish, but they are rather rare. They like warm water that is neutral to slightly acidic. The most popular rainbow is the 2 in.  neon dwarf rainbow. The 6 in red rainbowfish is pretty popular too. Striped rainbowfish are very attractive 4 inch fish. Boesmani rainbows get 4 in. long and they are popular. Celebes Rainbowfish are the  smallest Rainbowfish , at only 1.5 in. Madagascar Rainbowfish are 4 in. and are kind of drab. There are many different kinds of Rainbowfish.

Bonytongues

As their name implies, these fish have rather bony tongues. They like warm and acidic water. The African butterflyfish is the smallest, at only 4 in. At the other side of the spectrum, the Arapaima can get to 12 feet long.  The Silver Arowana can reach nearly 4 feet long. The 3.5 foot Asian Arowana is considered sacred in China. Jardini Arowanas are better for the home aquarium, only reaching around 2 feet. The Black and Blue Arowanas get a smidge bigger than the Jardini Arowana. Many species of knifefish are Bony Tongues, but they will be explained later in this page.

An African Butterflyfish, not the most colorful fish out there.

Knifefish

These are oddly shaped fish. As there name implies, they are shaped liked knives. They are often hard to keep, but they will be fine as long as their water is warm and acidic. African Black Knifefish are foot long fish that aren't  very black in color. Clown Knifefish can get nearly 3 feet long and there is a "Royal" form. Aba Aba Knifefish can reach 5 feet in length and and are very aggresive. The Green Knifefish reaches about 1.5 feet in length and is peaceful.

Freshwater Stingrays

These fish are notoriously hard to keep alive. They like very warm and acidic water. The occelated Stingray gets about 2 feet long and 1.5 feet in disc diameter. Teacup Stingrays get about 9 in. long and 6 in. in disc diameter.

 Freshwater Puffers

These fish are rare and often very aggressive. They all like warm water, but their ph range varies. The 7 in. Green-Spotted and Green Puffers like brackish, alkaline water. Indian Dwarf Puffers are tiny fish that like soft water. The Figure-Eight Puffer gets to a manageable size of 3 in. The 2 in. Lorteti puffer looks very strange. Giant mbu puffers can get to about 2.5 feet long and can weigh as much as a bowling ball. Carinotetraodon Salivator( has no common name) is a rare but pretty 3 in. puffer. The 4 in. red-eyed puffer often digs under the gravel in the aquarium. Congo puffers do the same things as red-eyed puffers, but they are 2 in. bigger.

 Bichirs and Ropefish

These are very odd, primitive looking fish. They like a ph of about 6.5, and they like very warm water. The most common and cheapest bichir is the senegal bichir,( also known as the gray bichir or dinosaur eel) which gets about a foot long. Some bichirs that get 16 in. long are the ornate, flathead, and tiger bichirs. The ropefish can get 2 feet long but doesn't require a large tank because it is very thin.
