Native Fish
These fish can be found in your own backyard (if you have a pond or stream). They like room temperature and neutral water. Most sunfish get a little less than a foot long and are good for large coldwater tanks. Smaller sunfish include the 4 in. blue spotted, orange spotted and black banded sunfish, and the 2 in. pygmy sunfish. The predatory largemouth bass gets about 2 feet long, so it is bad for the average home aquarium. All darter species stay smaller than 5 in. and are great for small to medium sized aquariums. Perch max out at about a foot long and are very pretty for a native fish. Most native minnows are about 6 in long and make a good schooling fish for a decent size tank. The creek chub has the same requirements as most minnows, except that it needs a big tank because it can get 1 foot long. Madtom catfish are great for small aquaria because they only get 5 in. long. Bullhead catfish get about a foot long. Native killifish will be on the killifish section of this site.
